started from the basement now we’re here

Brightwood Brewery and our tap room, Brightwood Market, have been a dream, and a labour of love, that has been a long time in the making.

The founders, Ian and Matt, met at their old engineering jobs in Halifax, NS. Matt had been home brewing for some time at that point and got Ian hooked. The hobby grew into such an obsession that they created Brightwood Brewery; headquartered out of the basement of Ian’s small house on Brightwood Avenue in Dartmouth, NS. A perfect spot for a nano-brewery.

After years of planning, they pieced together a 1BBL (~120L) brewing system using an eclectic arrangement of pots, electric heating elements, pumps and controls. In July of 2016 Brightwood Brewery made their 1st commercial sale at the Alderney Landing Farmers market, in Darmouth, where they would sell their beer in reusable 750ml ceramic and 1.89L glass growlers every Saturday morning. As well as getting beer out to the good people of Dartmouth with growlers, Brightwood would send out kegs to the local restaurants and bars.

After a few years of plugging away, Brightwood Brewery was able to build the brewery and space of their dreams. We opened the doors to the new brewery in August 2018 with a 10BBL (~1200L) brew house to create beers to be enjoyed in the tap room, taken home in growlers/cans and sent out in kegs.

Without the overwhelming support of the great people that have visited our market stall and the great local business owners that have carried our kegs, we wouldn’t have been able to pursue our dreams.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Passion for beer drives Brightwood, but one of the biggest aspects we’re excited about with a brick and mortar shop is the chance to do right by the community that helped us out so much. Stay tuned for local colabs, cross promotions, charity events, local food venders, concerts and local artist spotlights that make this community so great!
